Eight people died, while nine others were critically injured early Saturday, in a fatal road accident near Konza city, Makueni county, along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway that involved a Naekana Sacco Nissan matatu from Nairobi that collided head-on, with an oncoming Tahmeed bus.
Mukaa sub-county police commander Hussein Abduba said six of the victims died on the spot, while two succumbed to their injuries on arrival at the Machakos level 5 hospital.
The injured were rushed to the same hospital for treatment after being rescued by Kyumbi, Machakos and Muumandu emergency teams.
Abduba advised all motorists to be extra cautious while driving on the busy highway to avoid unnecessary loss of life, especially during this festive season and the impending back-to-school rush.
Bodies of the deceased were removed to the Machakos Level 5 mortuary, even as authorities commenced further investigations into the incident.
