Gianchere Special School in Kisii Central Sub-County in Kisii County has received a major security boost after the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya constructed a 218 meters long perimeter wall around the school at a cost of Sh 3 million.
Speaking during the commissioning of the perimeter wall, NFDK Chairman, Prof Francis Kibera said the project was very critical for the safety, security and protection of the 84 learners and resources within the institution.
Prof. Kibera challenged the school management to continue engaging well-wishers, donors and stakeholders in order to get additional funds for the development of more infrastructure.
He also encouraged the institution to apply for small grants of up to Sh 300,000 from the Fund to enable them undertake small projects.
Prof Julia Odhiambo, a member of the NFDK board of Trustees expressed optimism the wall will enhance security of the special children who mainly are hearing impaired and incapable of speech.
Prof Ojiambo noted how the previously porous posed danger to the children and school property after strangers found it easy to walk in and out at any time and at their own pleasure.
She called upon the teachers to take care of the children who were the future leaders
Dr Mike Kiswili, a Trustee of the Fund, urged the teachers to work together with the learners in implementing the Competency-Based Education system.
Dr Kiswili noted the new curriculum will equip the learners with disabilities with various skills in creativity, critical thinking, communication and innovation, thereby aligning with industry needs.
Cecilia Mbaka, another Trustee, applauded the school management for ensuring the project was delivered to quality standards by the contractor.
Mbaka acknowledged the funds were utilized prudently as per the specifications to ensure the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya achieves 100 per cent of their target.
