A section of leaders from Murang’a County has declared that the Mount Kenya region will firmly defend the position of Deputy President ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying they will not allow the seat to be handed over to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
The leaders spoke in Murang’a during the laying of the foundation stone for the Makuyu ICT Hub and official opening of the new Makuyu administrative units.
In an event attended by ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo, the leaders argued that the region has significantly benefited from projects under the Kenya Kwanza administration and should therefore safeguard its political position.
“We have seen development in our region and we cannot move to a place we do not know, we will continue supporting the government to the end so as to fulfill the promises we made to our people,” noted Kabogo.
The CS called on Kenyans not to listen to naysayers who have no agenda but instead continue supporting the transformative leadership of President William Ruto.
He also urged retired president Uhuru Kenyatta to stay away from active politics, saying the region would chart its own political path.
“While he remains my friend, I urge him to retire fully and stop meddling in day-to-day politics,” said Kabogo.
Maragua MP Mary Wamaua said Mt Kenya must strategically secure its interests ahead of the next presidential contest, adding that ODM should first address internal party challenges before laying claim to the Deputy President’s seat.
“Retaining the position within the Mt Kenya region would help sustain development projects and maintain the region’s influence in national leadership,” she said.
Kangema MP Peter Kihungi echoed the sentiments, stating that leaders from the region would not be misled into abandoning the current government arrangement.
Similarly, Nominated Senator, Veronica Maina said the Deputy President’s position remains non-negotiable for the region, adding that leaders would continue mobilizing residents to protect what they termed as the area’s rightful political stake.
The remarks come amid political discussions in which ODM leaders have indicated they could seek the Deputy President’s position as part of negotiations to support President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027 — a move leaders from Mt Kenya now say is unacceptable.
