Homa Bay County Commissioner (CC) Ronald Mwiwawi has urged the youth to stay away from drug abuse to safeguard their future.
He said it was regrettable that abuse of drugs especially bhang was a menace that had taken root amongst sections of the youthful population in the county.
Speaking from the Raila Odinga Stadium during the marking of the day of the Day of the African Child, Mwiwawi said drug peddlers were adopting discrete methods of pushing drugs including lacing of sanitary pads.
The administrator urged education stakeholders to step up the fight against drug abuse which he blamed for the increasing cases of indiscipline and unrest in schools.
He at the same time issued a warning against the culture of goonism as the general election draws close.
Mwiwawi said it was alarming to witness cases of boys as young as fifteen being recruited into criminal gangs for hire by some wayward politicians.
He said equally alarming were cases of young girls and women being recruited as goons locally referred to as “Sangwenyas”.
The CC warned that the security machinery will deal ruthlessly with the goons to safeguard peace in the county.
Mwiwawi told locals to take their parental responsibilities seriously by moulding their children into upright citizens.
He said that the interests of the child must always be safeguarded so that children get the best opportunities to achieve their dreams.
The ceremony was also attended by Secretary of Public Communications Patricia Ondeng who represented the Principal Secretary State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Stephen Isaboke.
