Some National Government administrators in Tharaka Nithi County have raised concern over the increasing number of school children seen idling along Chuka town streets during the ongoing long school holiday.
Addressing the press in Chuka town, the Acting Chief of Kiang’ondu Location, Ashford Miriti, called on parents to closely monitor their children and engage them in meaningful activities throughout the break.
Miriti who has been actively involved in community sensitization programs on child welfare said the habit of loitering exposes children to social vices such as drug abuse and crime.
“We have noticed many children roaming around town with no purpose. Parents must take responsibility and ensure their children remain under proper care and guidance during the holidays,” said Miriti.
His sentiments were echoed by Kiangondu Sub-location Assistant Chief Jackson Mawira who has been working closely with parents and local schools to promote discipline among learners.
Mawira urged parents not to abandon their responsibilities once schools close. “Some parents do not monitor behaviour of their children when they are at home, and this is when they need most attention. Encourage them to read, help with chores, or assign them simple learning tasks. If the school has not given homework, parents should take the initiative,” Mawira advised.
On his part, Erick Mwenda, the Assistant Chief of Chuka Township, cautioned bar owners and entertainment joint operators against selling alcohol or allowing minors into their premises.
Mwenda, known for his tough stance on underage drinking, said any business found flouting the law will face severe consequences. “Any business found selling alcohol to school children will face severe legal action,” he warned.
They administrators appealed to parents, teachers, and community members to work together to ensure children spend their holidays productively and stay away from negative influences that could jeopardize their future.
