The council of governors today visited the home of Kenya’s first vice president, Oginga Odinga to pay homage to the grave site that also hosts former prime minister Raila Odinga’s grave.
Led by the Chairman of the council of governors, Ahmed Abdullahi, the governors hailed the former prime minister, who was buried last Sunday (October 19,2025) as the champion of democracy and devolution.
Abdullahi who is the governor of Wajir county said Raila helped dismantle a system where resources were controlled at the centre and would be released as a token to favoured regions.
Flanked by governor Muthomi Njuki, James Orengo, Anyang’ Nyong’o, Simon Kachapin and Simba Arati, the CoG chairman said Kenyans will forever be grateful to the former prime minister for making Kenya what it is today.
“Whenever he picked a fight, even those that were oppressed did not initially believe that it was worth it. But he ended up succeeding to help the down trodden” said Abdullahi adding “Kenya has changed because of him”.
He said that their presence was not merely symbolic but a testament to the deep respect and gratitude for the late former Prime Minister as the champion of devolution noting that regions that were once governed under emergency law such as Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Turkana, and Lamu became fully integrated into the Kenyan nation owing to Raila’s relentless push for multi-party democracy and equitable resource distribution.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s widow, Mama Ida Odinga thanked the governors for their visit and extended her gratitude to all mourners, governors and citizens alike who had come to honour her husband’s memory.
Other dignitaries who paid homage to Raila’s grave today included Kapseret MP, Oscar Sudi and his Turkana North counterpart, Paul Ekwom Nabuin.
