IEBC boss warns politicians against hiring goons to attack opponents

The Chairperson of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Erastus Ethekon, has warned politicians against hiring goons to attack their opponents.

Speaking during a tour of Turkana County, Ethekon said those found culpable risk disqualified from contesting.

He said the Commission witnessed election violence during the recent by-elections, citing Kasipul where those found guilty were fined Sh1million. The Chairperson affirmed that the Commission will fully and without exception enforce the election code of conduct.

“There is no way a person is looking for a job as they cause pain to innocent people. Look for a job by talking to the voters, but do not use chaos,” said Ethekon.

The Commission Vice Chairperson, Fahima Araphat, lauded the County residents who have so far been among the leading counties in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Deputy Governor, Dr. John Erus, asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, to extend the ongoing mass voter registration exercise, by two more week.

He said many pastoralists from Turkana are currently out of the county in search of water and pasture for their livestock, and risk being locked-out of registration.

IEBC team paid a courtesy call to the County Commissioner before attending a stakeholder’s meeting at Moi Gardens Lodwar.
