Kiambu to experience lower rainfall this week

Kiambu County is expected to experience reduced rainfall and cooler temperatures over the next seven days.

The Kenya Meteorological Department, in its latest forecast, projects minimum temperatures of between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius for the county, with daytime highs ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall is also expected to ease, with cumulative totals estimated at around 120mm over the period.

This comes even as the National Police Service (NPS) warned of increased danger of flooding following the recent heavy downpours.

On Sunday, NPS confirmed that more than 50,000 households were affected by the recent spate of floods countrywide, with at least 18 deaths reported in the past week alone due to drowning and related incidents.

Police said mudslides had struck Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Kiambu Counties, leaving families displaced and causing extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

They reassured Kenyans that emergency response teams across ministries and county levels had been deployed to assist in the evacuation and rescue of victims.

“Multi-agency teams are actively engaged in search and rescue operations and the evacuation of at-risk residents, alongside the provision of emergency relief supplies and the assessment of high-risk zones to prevent further loss of life,” NPS added in a statement to newsrooms.

However, they urged residents in high-risk and low-lying areas to remain vigilant and, where necessary, move to safer grounds.

“The public is strongly advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures, particularly those living in landslide-prone or flood-affected areas,” read part of the statement.

Earlier this year, the Kenya Meteorological Department, in a detailed report, cautioned that the March–April–May long rains season typically peaks in April, often leading to flooding, reduced visibility, and rising river levels in some of the affected regions.

“The peak of the rainfall season is expected to occur in April over most regions, except for the Coast, where the peak is expected in May,” clarified the statement.
