The Kisii county government is set to roll out color-coded waste bins to ease the segregation of waste and improve recycling efficiency in the county.
The three bins include the green bin, which will be used to dispose of organic waste, the black bin for general waste, and the blue bin for recyclable waste.
The initiative is in line with the National Environment Management Authority’s approved color-coding scheme for waste management.
Speaking during a sensitization forum for small-scale traders at the Kisii Agricultural Training Centre on the outskirts of Kisii town, Kisii Governor Simba Arati said the bins will be situated in major towns to ensure proper disposal of waste in the county.

“We have kicked off the process of waste collection and sorting to ensure no waste is dumped along the roadside as has been witnessed in the past,” Arati noted.
The county boss added the county will also distribute over 50 skip bins within markets for the collection of waste, which will in turn be transported to the waste management facility for sorting by skip loader trucks.
He urged the traders to utilize the acquired bins appropriately for effective waste management and ensure Kisii County remains clean.
In addition, the governor said the county had received waste recycling equipment worth Sh170 million at the Waste Management Facility through the support of the United Kingdom’s Sustainable Urban Economic Development (SUED) Programme.
Arati noted the effective waste management efforts, including waste segregation and the material recovery facility, are aimed at aiding the successful transition of Kisii town into city status.
