Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has urged Kisii residents to embrace public cemeteries for burial of their loved ones to ease land pressure.
Addressing the press after holding the 39th security meeting dubbed Jukwaa la Usalama session at the county headquarters, Murkomen attributed most of the local growing offences to land fragmentation, which remains an emotive issue in the region.
At the same time, the CS said the bizarre killing of relatives and older persons in some parts of the country for alleged witchcraft among other factors, was just a gimmick by younger people to eliminate the elderly and inherit their land.
Murkomen noted the solution to land issues lies in land consolidation, else the continued fragmentation of land, may end up making the county, which a major contributor to the country’s food security, one big slum.
He added that it was important to ensure proper planning of Kisii county,which strategically borders Tanzania through the Isebania border, a major crossing point used for travel and trade.
The CS also said the government will relocate Kisii prisons from the main town, so to create space for affordable housing projects.
Murkomen also sent a stern warning to perpetrators of all forms of criminal offences afflicting Kisii County including criminal gangs, drugs trafficking and Gender Based Violence among others.
Additionally, he castigated politicians using boda boda riders for criminal activities saying this was a breach to peaceful coexistence.
