Tertiary students from Kisumu County have vowed not to be manipulated by politicians seeking to destabilize the national government, emphasizing their commitment to supporting development initiatives regardless of political affiliations.
The students, who converged in Kisumu, highlighted that the government of President William Ruto, has made significant strides in engaging youth through various programs aimed at addressing matters education, housing, and employment.
Led by the Maseno University Students’ President Victor Otieno, the group noted that the current University funding model established by President Ruto, ensures that beneficiaries across all levels of learning, from middle-level colleges to universities, receive support.
Otieno stressed that students will no longer be used for political expediencies and called on the government to extend development initiatives further to reach more youth.
Silas Adem, President of the Kisumu National Polytechnic, noted that young people were already benefiting from government programs such as Affordable Housing initiatives and the NYOTA program, which provide opportunities for skills development and economic empowerment.
Emelda Atieno, a trainee from the same institution, said that students will continue to support government projects implemented in Kisumu County, acknowledging that while the region did not vote for the Kenya Kwanza government, it has nonetheless benefited from development programs.
Atieno further cautioned against engaging in demonstrations that could turn violent, recalling that past unrest, had caused significant harm to students.
The students’ message underscores a growing awareness among youth in Kisumu of their role as stakeholders in governance and development, rather than as pawns in political contests.
