Hundreds of residents, students, teachers, and government officials in Emuhaya Sub-county in Vihiga, on Monday, gathered at Emmunzi Primary School to commemorate Kenya’s journey towards self-rule and national development.
The event was attended by the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Monica Ithatwa, who was the chief guest. Also present were the area Member of the County Assembly (MCA), Paul Ananda; representative of Emuhaya Legislator (MP) Omboko Milemba; chiefs from across Emuhaya; and other government officials.
The celebrations marked Kenya’s 63rd Madaraka Day under the national theme “Education, Skills, and the Future,” focusing on placing learning, innovation, technical training, and skills development at the center of Kenya’s economic and national transformation.
Speaking during the event, Ithatwa urged residents to embrace peace, unity, and patriotism as the country continues to pursue social and economic progress.
She emphasized the importance of working together to support government development initiatives and improve livelihoods within the community.
Ithatwa encouraged parents and guardians to prioritize education and nurture responsible citizens who will contribute positively to the country’s future, noting that education remains a key pillar in achieving sustainable development and empowering young people.

Addressing the gathering, Ananda strongly condemned criminal activities, particularly cases of murder and other forms of violence that have contributed to insecurity within the community.
The MCA called on residents to uphold moral values, respect the rule of law, and resolve disputes peacefully.
Ananda further urged members of the public to work closely with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and individuals involved in criminal acts.
The MCA highlighted several development projects being implemented in the area, reaffirming.
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, education, and healthcare services.
In a speech delivered by his representative, Emuhaya MP, Omboko Milemba, conveyed his Madaraka Day wishes to residents and urged them to embrace hard work, patriotism, and unity.
He reaffirmed his commitment to championing development projects that will improve education, infrastructure, healthcare, and economic opportunities for the people.
Vihiga Governor, Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, in his message, wished residents a joyous Madaraka Day and thanked them for their continued support of county development programmes.
He encouraged citizens to foster peace, cooperation, and innovation as key drivers of growth and prosperity in the county.
Chiefs from various locations within Emuhaya called on residents to cooperate with government agencies in addressing security concerns and social challenges.
They urged members of the public to remain vigilant, report criminal activities, and promote harmony among different communities.
The celebration featured patriotic songs, cultural performances by pupils, and entertainment from local groups.
Residents expressed pride in the country’s achievements since attaining self-rule and called for continued collaboration between leaders and citizens to accelerate development in Emuhaya and the nation at large.
