Shock and grief has engulfed residents of Kapsita village in Turi, Molo sub-county after the body of a 30-year-old man was discovered hanging from a tree in what police suspect to be a case of suicide.
The deceased, identified as Joseph Njenga, was found lifeless early morning by villagers, heading out for their daily activities.
Area residents quickly alerted the area chief, who then informed police.
Confirming the incident, Molo Sub-County Police Commander Timon Odingo, said investigations into the matter had been launched.
The body was moved to Molo sub-county hospital morgue awaiting postmortem.
“We urge young people to seek help whenever overwhelmed by problems affecting their mental health instead of resorting to such unfortunate ends,” Odingo stated.
The police commander further raised concern over the growing mental health challenges among youth in the area, linking them to issues such as unemployment and drug abuse.
“It is advisable for the youth to speak out their problems and avoid drug abuse, where the latter remains one of the biggest challenges facing a majority of them,” he said.
This incident adds to a string of similar cases reported in Molo over the past year, highlighting what residents describe as a worrying trend.
Many of the victims are believed to have been silently battling depression, substance abuse, or economic hardships.
Community leaders are now calling for urgent intervention from the county government and health officials, urging them to provide more mental health awareness campaigns and counseling services targeting vulnerable groups, particularly the youth.
“We cannot continue losing our young people like this. The government must step in with counseling programs and support systems before it is too late,” said one village elder.
Meanwhile, even as the community mourns Njenga’s death, residents hope that increased awareness and mental health support would prevent further tragedies.
