Kenya’s shipping, maritime, and blue economy sectors are set to receive a major boost as outstanding individuals, institutions, companies, and innovators are lined up for recognition at the prestigious Kenya Maritime Excellence Awards (KMEA).
The inaugural awards are expected to bring together key players across Kenya’s maritime ecosystem to celebrate exceptional achievements, promote excellence, and shine the national and international spotlight on the critical role the sector plays in driving trade, investment, employment, and sustainable economic development.
The awards are scheduled for December 11, 2026, at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi, and will provide a platform for recognizing the people and organizations making a significant contribution to Kenya’s maritime and blue economy ambitions.
The initiative comes at a strategic time when Kenya is seeking to unlock the enormous economic potential of its oceans and water resources while strengthening its position as a leading maritime hub in Africa.
Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs Ali Hassan Joho welcomed the awards, describing them as a timely initiative that will help celebrate the people and institutions driving transformation in the sector.
“The Kenya Maritime Excellence Awards comes at the right time for our country. As we expand our Blue Economy and strengthen Kenya’s position in regional and international maritime trade, we must recognize and celebrate the people, institutions, and enterprises that are driving this transformation.”
The CS said recognizing excellence would help create greater visibility for Kenya’s maritime sector while encouraging innovation, investment, and stronger partnerships.
“This is not simply an awards ceremony. It is an opportunity to tell Kenya’s maritime story, attract investment, inspire innovation, and demonstrate that our country has the talent, institutions, and ambition required to compete in the global maritime economy.”
Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs Aden Millah said the awards would provide a much-needed platform to recognize professionals and institutions whose contribution to the maritime sector often goes unnoticed.
“The maritime sector is built on people, skills, innovation, and institutions. For a long time, many of these contributions have not received the visibility they deserve. The Kenya Maritime Excellence Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate those who are making a measurable contribution to the growth and development of our maritime industry.”
Millah said the awards could encourage players across the maritime value chain to raise their standards and embrace innovation.
“When we recognize excellence, we motivate others to aspire to higher standards. These awards can therefore become a catalyst for innovation, professional development, better service delivery, and competitiveness across Kenya’s maritime value chain,” he stated.
He added that recognition of maritime professionals would complement government efforts to develop globally competitive maritime skills and expand opportunities for Kenyan seafarers in international markets.
Principal Secretary for Blue Economy Betsy Muthoni said the awards would help demonstrate the wide economic potential of the Blue Economy and encourage more Kenyans to participate in ocean-based enterprises.
“The Blue Economy is about turning the potential of our oceans, lakes, and other water bodies into sustainable economic opportunities while protecting the environment. The Kenya Maritime Excellence Awards will help bring visibility to the innovators, entrepreneurs, communities, and institutions creating value within this space.
The PS said the initiative would also help inspire young people to view the Blue Economy as a source of employment, entrepreneurship, investment, and innovation.
“We want to encourage a generation of Kenyans to see the ocean not only as an environmental resource but also as a source of jobs, enterprise, technology, food security, investment, and national prosperity,” he added.
The Kenya Maritime Excellence Awards have been designed to recognize excellence across a broad spectrum of the shipping, maritime, and blue economy sectors.
The awards will recognize achievements in areas including shipping and maritime logistics, ports, seafaring, maritime education and training, maritime innovation and technology, the blue economy and sustainability, leadership and governance, women in maritime, corporate and community impact, environmental excellence, and legislative leadership.
Special recognition categories are also intended to honour individuals and institutions whose contribution has had a significant and lasting impact on Kenya’s maritime development.
The awards are intended to go beyond celebrating success. They seek to establish a platform that promotes best practices, innovation, investment, professional excellence, partnerships, and sustainable development within the sector.
This is particularly important as Kenya seeks to maximize the economic benefits of its strategic location along the Indian Ocean and the importance of the Port of Mombasa as a gateway to Kenya and the wider East African region.
The maritime sector remains critical to Kenya’s economy, supporting international trade, logistics, transport, tourism, fisheries, aquaculture, seafaring, manufacturing, and a wide range of businesses.
