Teachers in Kajiado County have elected Martin Koikai as the new Executive Secretary of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers Kajiado Branch, marking a major leadership change within the union.
Mr. Koikai, a former teacher at Moi Isinya Girls Secondary School, secured victory after garnering 744 votes in a tightly contested election held on Thursday, February 26. The poll attracted one of the highest teacher turnouts recorded in the county.
His closest rival, Mr. Maina Bundi, finished second with 641 votes.
The results also showed that Mr. Koikai’s ‘Team Change’ swept all 14 elective positions, dislodging the previous administration in a landslide victory.
The new executive team will include Mr. David Kisali as Chairperson, Ms. Nelius Wanjiru as Treasurer, and Mr. Laban Kirui as Organising Secretary.
The election drew keen interest from local leaders, with several politicians closely monitoring the process. Congratulations were extended to the winners by Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, who has previously underscored the importance of supporting teachers as part of his county development agenda.
In an official statement, the Governor said the new leadership had the confidence of teachers and assured them of a cordial working relationship between the County Government and the union.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Koikai pledged to begin work immediately, outlining key priorities that include addressing the integration of Junior Secondary School teachers and improving medical cover for educators.
“This is a victory for every teacher in the classroom,” he said amid cheers from supporters at the tallying centre.
He added: “We are moving into a new era of Team Change, with our focus firmly on restoring the dignity and welfare of all teachers in Kajiado.”
Mr. Koikai’s election is expected to shape labour relations and advocacy for teachers in the county in the coming years.
