The County Government of Nandi has officially launched the Nandi County Physical and Land Use Development Plan 2024–2034, a comprehensive 10-year blueprint designed to guide sustainable growth, protect natural resources, and coordinate development across the county.
The plan was unveiled during a ceremony held at the iconic Eliud Kipchoge Keino Stadium.
Speaking during the launch, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang said the framework will provide clear direction on land use, settlement planning, infrastructure development, and investment coordination in all parts of the county.
“We have today launched a transformative 10-year roadmap that will guide how our county grows, develops, and protects its resources,” Sang said.
The Governor noted that the plan was developed through extensive public participation in all wards, bringing together locals, leaders, professionals and key stakeholders to shape its vision. He said the inclusive process ensures that the document reflects the aspirations and priorities of residents.
According to Sang, the plan seeks to promote orderly growth, improve service delivery and guarantee sustainable development while safeguarding the interests of both present and future generations.
As a county whose economy is largely anchored on agriculture and endowed with rich natural resources, Nandi will use the plan to strengthen the protection of farmland, forests, wetlands and other environmentally sensitive areas while guiding structured urban expansion.
Nandi Deputy Governor Dr. Yulita Mitei termed the plan a landmark step towards structured and evidence-based development.
“This blueprint gives us a scientific and participatory framework to manage our land responsibly, enhance climate resilience and secure the future of our children,” she said.
In a related development, the county government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kiptapkei Environmental CBO and other partners to enhance conservation efforts and protect water catchment areas.
Speaking at the same event, Joel Malakwen, CEO of Kiptapkei Environmental CBO, described the day as historic for the community-based organization.
“Today was truly a special and historic day for us. We officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding for our Nandi Carbon, Climate Resilience, Nutrition and Livelihoods Program with the Nandi County Government alongside our valued partners Save the Children Global Ventures and Save the Children Kenya,” said Malakwen.
He noted that the colorful event was filled with hope as they shared how the programme will positively impact communities through climate action, environmental conservation, improved nutrition, stronger livelihoods and increased household incomes.
“This partnership means so much to us. It shows that when community organisations, county leadership and development partners come together, real change becomes possible,” he said.
Malakwen expressed gratitude to the County Government for its support and commitment, as well as to development partners for their collaboration.
Other key partners present at the launch, included officials from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), National Land Commission (NLC), Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the River Yala Water Fund, lauded the county for adopting a forward-looking land use framework and strengthening environmental partnerships.
County officials expressed optimism that the implementation of the Physical and Land Use Development Plan and the newly signed conservation agreements will attract investment, enhance environmental protection and position Nandi as a model for sustainable county planning.
