NGO provides free eye-screening to elderly in Magumoni

Residents of Magumoni ward in Tharaka Nithi County have a reason to smile after a Non-Governmental Organization provided them with a free eye screening that mainly targeted the elderly.

Fred Hollows Foundation, under the auspices of the Tharaka Nithi County government, pitched camp at Kigogo dispensary, where they conducted the free exercise, which included education, informing, sensitizing, and actual physical eye check-ups.

Nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Wanja Karuku ensured that the Tharaka Nithi County Government came in handy in actualizing the plan through the provision of medical equipment and drugs and mobilizing Community Health Volunteers, who played a big role in providing services during the philanthropic event.

Residents were asked to embrace diets with lots of vitamins to boost their eyesight and immunity.

County health workers also advised the residents to often go for eye screening at the county referral hospital, citing that they have modern equipment and well-trained and qualified opticians.

“We urge you to frequently seek eye check-ups. This should not be your last check-up but rather a routine. Our county referral hospital has modern equipment for this purpose, and these things are there for you as our residents,” said the nominated MCA.

Ms. Karuku further disclosed that the county government was also working with area residents as community health volunteers who go from home to home for issues like blood pressure and diabetes testing.

“We are concerned about you as your elected leaders. We are here to serve you,” stressed the MCA, who is the vice chair of the health services committee at the Tharaka Nithi County Assembly.
