Concreting works are underway at the Mutuya Box Culvert in Ikinu, Githunguri Municipality, as the county government continues to roll out road infrastructure improvements across Kiambu.
According to the Ministry of Roads, Transport, Public Works and Utilities, Kiambu County, the ongoing works include the top slab, headwalls, and wingwalls of the structure.
The Mutuya crossing has for years posed challenges to residents and motorists in Ikinu, particularly during the rainy season, when the area has often been rendered impassable, cutting off access to markets, schools, and health facilities.
Once complete, the bridge is expected to provide a safer and more reliable crossing for residents, improving connectivity and opening up the Ikinu area for greater economic and social activity.
The project falls under the Boresha Barabara initiative, through which the county government has continued to improve road infrastructure, enhance accessibility, and connect communities across Kiambu.
The initiative has so far seen the construction and rehabilitation of several roads and bridges across the county’s sub-counties, with the county government citing improved rural access as a key driver of local economic growth.
Speaking on the progress of the works, Governor Kimani Wamatangi said the bridge formed part of the county’s wider efforts to deliver durable infrastructure.
“This bridge will open up Ikinu and connect our people to markets, schools, and essential services; therefore, we are focused on improving connectivity and delivering durable infrastructure across Kiambu County,” Wamatangi said.
The Ministry of Roads, Transport, Public Works, and Utilities has been overseeing the works, with technical teams on site to ensure the structure meets required engineering standards before commissioning.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to ease movement for motorists, boda-boda operators, and pedestrians in Ikinu and its environs, cutting down on the risks previously associated with the crossing, especially during the rainy season.
The county government has indicated that similar infrastructure projects are planned or underway in other parts of Githunguri Municipality and across the wider county as part of continued efforts to improve rural connectivity.
