Butula MP Joseph Oyula has urged parents to be vigilant and take up responsibility by ensuring there are parents in the lives of their children to curb the cases of unrest and substance abuse among school-going children.
The legislator spoke after handing over two classrooms at Dadira Comprehensive School, which was constructed by NGCDF Butula Sub-County, Busia County, to accommodate Grade 9 learners in an effort to support the implementation of the CBC programme.
“A good parent must have adequate opportunity to monitor, nurture and groom their children to be responsible citizens. This is the only way we will mitigate cases of child neglect in Busia,” said Oyula.
He stressed the need for parents to support learning institutions by ensuring they pay school fees for the smooth operation of school.
“The bursary from the government is only meant to supplement efforts by parents. We must pay school fees and take a keen interest in the progress of our learners,” he added.
Oyula noted that the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) puts demands on a communal and collaborative approach in nurturing children.
“I urge you parents to create more time with your children; do not delegate. Support and assist them without delegating your responsibilities to the house managers,” the legislature noted.
He warned students to give value for money by excelling in their academics even as they shun peer pressure and drug abuse effects.
Parents, led by Resilla Rabongo and Simon Musungu, applauded the MP for his commitment to improving the quality of education in the constituency by prioritising education schemes and infrastructure in institutions.
“We want to acknowledge MP Oyula for his commitment towards the education of our children in the Subcounty. Under his tenure, we have seen excellence progress in our schools and better performance for the last 10 years,” noted Musungu.
They challenged parents to instill good moral values and discipline for better performance and moulding of future leaders with Christian values.
“Discipline and performance go hand in hand; we must advise our young generations accordingly if we want to shape a generation of leaders with upright moral values and integrity,” said Rabongo.
