Bomet County Police commander Edward Imbwaga has cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their hands by destroying vehicles which are involved in accidents, in revenge.
Imbwaga noted that there is a creeping tendency by members of the public to quickly torch or vandalise vehicles once an accident occurs, saying this leads to wanton destruction of property.
Speaking at Kabungut in Bomet central sub-county, Imbwaga cited a recent incident where police thwarted efforts by a section of the public to set ablaze a trailer that had reportedly hit a bodaboda rider in Bomet town and several other incidents earlier on where residents have burnt vehicles and motorbikes believed to have caused accidents.
He noted that besides the destruction of property occasioned by the illegal arson in cases of accident on the roads, such criminal acts by irate mobs end destroying evidence of accidents to enable insurance mitigation and responsibility on the part of errant motorists.
Imbwaga advised members of the public and those whose loved ones are involved accidents to desist from vandalising or burning the vehicles involved and allow the police to institute proper administrative action for justice to prevail.
“If we burn vehicles as a result of accident or maim the drivers involved, we will be not only doing injustice to the victims who deserve compensation, but also destroying property of other persons unnecessarily,” said the police boss.
He said that the police had what it takes to enable accident victims get justice and that could only happen if the scene of accident remains unadulterated for quality police analysis.
