The Chief Executive Officer for the Water Resources Authority (WRA), Mohamed Shurie, has asked residents of Garissa County to register as voters in large numbers now that the continuous registration exercise was on.
Shurie who has declared interest for the Garissa gubernatorial race, urged the residents to turn-up in large numbers for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, set to kick-off later this month.
Noting that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had been constituted, they had another opportunity to choose leaders through the ballot and ensure that their aspiration and future was in safe hands.
Speaking to the press after receiving endorsement from his Abdwaq clan, Shurie cautioned the residents that showing-up in political rallies was inconsequential, unless they acquired the national Identity and voter’s cards, to shape their destiny.
“When the IEBC starts the mass voter registration, please come out in large numbers and register. If you don’t have a vote, you cannot help me or the government by voting for the president’s second term bid, or even other positions,” Shurie said.
“The only way you can support is when you get the voter’s card and be eligible to vote. If you don’t have an ID card, please go get them so that you can register to vote and that’s the only way you can help me,” he added.
Shurie urged area residents aged 18 and above to take advantage of the abolishment of the ID vetting process by President William Ruto, to register and acquire the ID cards, so that they can be eligible to vote in the next General Elections.
The Kenya electoral body IEBC late last month announced that it will resume continuous voter registration exercise on 29th this month in line with its Constitutional mandate under Article 88(4) of the 2010 Constitution.
“This exercise is a vital step in ensuring that every eligible Kenyan has the opportunity to participate in shaping the country’s future, through democratic elections. It is particularly directed towards young people who have recently attained 18 years, and all citizens who have not yet registered or need to update their voter information,” IEBC statement read in parts.
