Kakamega County is stepping up efforts to address water shortages in Matungu sub county through the Sh11.8 million Lung’anyiro Water Project targeting residents of Namamali Ward.
The project is expected to improve access to clean and safe water for residents of Nyapwaka and Mungore areas once completed.
It is also expected to boost household water connections and improve livelihoods in the area.
Funded under the Financing Locally Led Climate Action programme, the project involves drilling a borehole, installation of a solar-powered pumping system, construction of a 10-metre elevated steel water tank with a capacity of 32 cubic metres and laying of a 6.2-kilometre water distribution pipeline.
Kakamega County Executive Committee Member for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Peninah Mukabane, said the county government remains committed to expanding access to clean water in rural areas while strengthening climate-resilient infrastructure.
She urged residents to take advantage of the project by applying for water connections through the Kakamega County Rural Water and Sanitation Company (KACRUWASCO), which will operate and manage the system upon completion.
Upon operationalization, the Lung’anyiro Water Project is expected to ease water scarcity challenges and support socio-economic development in the surrounding communities.
