Thika students benefit from Sh17.7 million NG-CDF bursary boost

More than 2,500 students from needy families pursuing studies in universities, colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions have received a major boost after the Thika Town NG-CDF disbursed bursaries worth Sh17.7 million.

The funds are an extension of another over Sh80 million that was disbursed to support learners in secondary school in April this year, in a move aimed at improving access to education and reducing the financial burden on families.

Speaking during the issuance of bursary cheques at Chania Boys High School, Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a noted that investing in tertiary education is critical in nurturing a skilled workforce, adding that the bursaries will help students acquire industry-relevant knowledge and for future employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

“The goal is to ensure no child misses an opportunity to acquire education because of financial challenges. Education remains the surest path to empowerment and development,” she said.

The legislator expressed confidence that the bursaries will help improve school retention and completion rates while opening opportunities for young people to acquire skills needed in the job market.

At the same time, Ng’ang’a called on parents and guardians to play a more active role in guiding and mentoring their children amid rising cases of unrest in learning institutions across the country.

She urged parents to closely monitor their children, instil discipline and maintain open communication to help address challenges that may push learners into destructive behaviour.

“There is a need for stronger collaboration between parents, teachers and learners to address emerging challenges facing young people,” said Ng’ang’a, adding that regular engagement and open communication can help prevent indiscipline, vandalism and other destructive behaviours in learning institutions.

James Kamau, a parent whose child benefited from the bursary, said the support had come at a critical time, noting that huge fee arrears had threatened to derail the student’s education.

“My child was at risk of missing classes because we could not clear the outstanding fees. This bursary has given us hope and will enable him to continue with his studies without interruption,” said Kamau, whose child pursues a certificate in Building and Construction.
