The Trans Nzoia County Government has partnered with the National Government to strengthen preventive measures against Ebola as cases continue to soar in neighboring countries.
Speaking at the County Government headquarters in Kitale, Chief Officer for Health Services and Sanitation Dr. Judith Simiyu said the collaboration aims to ensure the county is fully prepared should an outbreak occur.
“We have officers from the National Government who will train our staff. The trained staff will then cascade the information to other health workers, who will sensitize communities on Ebola prevention, preparedness, and management,” she said.
Dr. Simiyu revealed that the county is currently inspecting health facilities to identify suitable isolation areas for potential patients.
Meanwhile, she appealed to the National Government to fast-track the release of resources to border counties.
“I urge the National Government to cascade resources to Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, and Busia. With adequate resources, we can gain the upper hand against Ebola,” she noted.
The Chief Officer said ongoing measures include training healthcare workers and conducting public awareness campaigns to educate residents on Ebola symptoms and prevention.
Dr. Simiyu’s revelation comes as residents and authorities at the Suam border also intensify screening and prevention efforts.
Measures in place include handwashing stations, sanitizers, distribution of protective masks, and thorough screening of travelers moving between Kenya and Uganda.
