Dr. Naomi Shaban, who has served as Taveta MP for 20 years has conceded an early defeat to Wiper Party’s Bwire Okano, a newcomer headed to unseat the veteran Kenyan and Coast politician.
Through her WhatsApp group of supporters, Shaban said that as things stand she was not going to defend her seat and instead conceded to her rival.
“This time I’m not going to be your MP. We’ve lost to a good competitor, Bwire Okano, and he deserves my congratulations,” said Shaban in her WhatsApp message.
The veteran legislator joined parliament in 2002 after flooring Basil Criticos, another veteran politician in the Kanu’s government.
The defeat brings the curtain down to Shaban’s long political career and she will be remembered as one of the fierce women politicians in the Kenyan post-colonial legislature.
