The maternity department of Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital (VTRH) conducted its weekly Continuing Medical Education (CME) session focusing on oxygen therapy.
The session, held at the hospital chapel, drew active participation from the newborn unit team and students from Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Vihiga.
The CME aimed to equip healthcare providers and students with up-to-date knowledge and practical skills on the management of oxygen therapy, a critical intervention for patients with low blood oxygen levels.
The session was led by Dr. Brian Demesi, Clinical Officer at VTRH, who highlighted the importance of oxygen as a life-saving medical commodity.
“If not detected early and managed appropriately, hypoxemia can lead to severe and life-threatening complications, particularly in neonates and maternity patients,” Dr. Demesi noted.
He emphasized the proper use of pulse oximeters to monitor oxygen saturation, ensuring safe and effective administration.
With plans underway to install a state-of-the-art oxygen liquid plant at the facility, the CME comes at a timely moment, enhancing staff and student competency, promoting patient safety, and strengthening preparedness for improved oxygen delivery services.
