Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Abdi Jehow has issued driving licences to 100 youth from different parts of the county under an initiative aimed at improving their access to employment and livelihood opportunities.
The programme targets young people seeking opportunities in the transport sector and other areas where driving skills are required, with the beneficiaries expected to use the skills acquired to seek employment or pursue self-employment.
Speaking during the event, Fatuma said the initiative was part of efforts to support young people by equipping them with skills that could enable them to become economically productive.
She said the programme was intended to create opportunities for youth to participate in the economic development of Wajir County, adding that her office would continue supporting initiatives targeting young people.
The Woman Representative said supporting youth with practical skills was important in improving their ability to access employment and establish livelihoods, particularly in sectors with growing demand for skilled workers.
She also urged young people in Wajir County to acquire national identity cards and register as voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
One of the beneficiaries who spoke to Kenya News Agency (KNA) welcomed the initiative, saying obtaining driving licences would improve their chances of securing employment and earning a livelihood.
The beneficiaries said the programme had provided them with an opportunity to acquire a qualification that could be useful in the transport sector and other areas of employment.
They thanked the Woman Representative’s office for supporting programmes targeting young people and called for similar initiatives to benefit more youth across the county.
The driving licence initiative is part of efforts to expand opportunities for young people in Wajir by equipping them with practical skills and supporting their participation in economic and social activities.
