Homa Bay County Commissioner (CC) Ronald Mwiwawi has urged the youth to utilise government and private sector initiatives aimed at creating employment and empowering the youth economically.
Speaking during a press briefing in his office, Mwiwawi noted that the number of young people joining the job market continues to increase every year as graduates leave colleges and universities in search of employment opportunities.
He acknowledged that the available jobs may not always match the growing number of job seekers but assured youth that the government has put in place various programs to absorb and support them.
The CC encouraged the youth to seek employment opportunities both within and outside the county, as well as online jobs where they can earn a living and gain valuable experience.
Mwiwawi said the growing digital economy was a game changer for the job market noting that young people were being trained to take advantage of digital job opportunities that can be accessed through online platforms.
“The government is committed to creating job opportunities to ensure that young people remain productive and do not fall into idleness or crime,” he said.
He pointed to initiatives such as the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme and other youth empowerment projects that are helping young people access opportunities, acquire skills, and start businesses.
Mwiwawi said that the government is also focusing on equipping youth with entrepreneurial skills as well as knowledge on how to identify and utilise available opportunities to improve their livelihoods.
He encouraged young people to understand their talents and passions, develop relevant skills, and take advantage of government support programmes designed to enhance self-reliance and economic growth.
The administrator reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth empowerment, saying that investing in young people is key to promoting development in the country.
