PSC issues strict warning over mistreatment of government interns

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has issued a stern warning to serving public officers against mistreating new graduate interns posted in their offices.

The Commission emphasized that any form of abuse within government institutions is a criminal offense that will carry severe consequences.

During a capacity-building workshop for Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP) mentors and coaches in Naivasha, Tuesday, the Commission highlighted a troubling increase in intern mistreatment cases prompting the warning.

Speaking at the workshop, PSC Chairperson, Francis Meja, emphasized that supervisors were tasked with the responsibility of protecting and mentoring young graduates under their care, reminding them of their duty to actively safeguard the young graduates stationed in government offices rather than just overseeing their daily tasks.

“Mentors and coaches must serve as the primary shield for these graduates. Your responsibility is to cultivate a workplace that treats every intern with safety, respect and dignity.” Stated Meja.

He further noted that physical, emotional, or sexual misconduct violates basic workplace ethics, betrays public trust and represents a punishable criminal act.

The Commission issued the warning after identifying a growing trend of intern mistreatment. The rise in cases has sparked concerns regarding the safety and well-being of young graduates participating in the premier programme.

PSC Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Paul Famba, urged mentors and coaches to fully embrace their responsibilities. He emphasized the need for supervisors to actively commit to the professional development of the interns placed under their guidance.

“These interns enter your institutions waiting for guidance and protection, and the quality of your mentorship is what stands between a shattered career and a successful future.” Stated Famba.

The Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP) is a government initiative that provides graduates with hands-on work experience, giving young professionals the chance to develop essential technical and career skills within the public sector. Successful applicants are stationed across government ministries and agencies, where they gain valuable experience through a one-year paid internship.
