Chiefs in Kisii urged to trace owners of uncollected IDs

Kisii Governor Simba Arati has called on chiefs in Kisii County to intervene and help trace and hand over processed identification cards (IDs) to the rightful owners.

Speaking to the press in Kenyenya Sub-county, Governor Arati urged the chiefs to work with the Kisii Registration Bureau to generate a list of those who were yet to collect their IDs, collect the document, identify it, and hand it to owners.

“This process of tracing the owners of uncollected IDs will enable them to register as voters ahead of next year’s General Election,” Arati said.

This comes days after the National Assembly Committee on Administration and Internal Security’s inspection tour of the National Registration Bureau in Kisii, where members raised concerns over more than 12,700 uncollected IDs in the County.

Led by Lari Member of Parliament (MP) Mburu Kahangara, the committee said the backlog pointed to a growing challenge in the registration process despite improvements in document production through the use of live capture technology.

Notably, the county had registered over 34,000 new ID applicants and surpassed its 25,000 target for the 2025/2026 financial year, yet the number of uncollected IDs posed a major challenge even as voter registration was ongoing.
