CC Osumba calls for stronger child protection, school safety systems

Nairobi North Sub-Region County Commissioner (CC), Simon Osumba, has called for enhanced child protection systems and continued collaboration between government agencies and citizens in the delivery of all-inclusive government development programmes.

Speaking during the 63rd Madaraka Day Celebrations at Railway Training Institute in Nairobi’s South ‘B’ Estate, after reading President William Ruto’s speech, Osumba raised concern over the safety of learning institutions.

The CC noted that recent disruptions had affected some schools and called for enhanced cooperation between parents, teachers, and education officers to ensure children learn in safe environments, urging parents to support education officers in maintaining discipline and order in schools.

He further stressed that schools should remain spaces for learning and not conflict, adding that authorities would take responsibility in cases where safety is compromised.

Osumba urged communities to strengthen collaboration with the education sector to address emerging challenges affecting learners.

In a strong appeal on child protection, highlighting the availability of emergency reporting systems, encouraging members of the public to report cases affecting children through the designated hotline.

“If you have any child-related issue, go to the children’s office and report. We also have a toll-free number, call 116,” he said, adding that the system is meant to ensure a swift response to child welfare concerns.

The County Commissioner emphasized that national unity remains central to the government’s development agenda, urging citizens and leaders to work together in strengthening service delivery and safeguarding public institutions, particularly schools.

Osumba underscored the importance of inclusivity, stating that all Kenyans share equal rights regardless of their region of origin.

The County Commissioner acknowledged the role of security agencies in maintaining security and stability across the sub-region, commending police officers and administrators for their continued efforts in safeguarding communities and supporting government programmes.

He noted that inter-agency cooperation remains critical in addressing emerging security and social challenges, particularly those affecting schools and households.

On public health, Osumba referenced ongoing government interventions aimed at strengthening healthcare systems and preventing disease outbreaks, including COVID-19-related measures.

He said the government was implementing renewed response strategies in collaboration with health officials and community health promoters.

The Administrator pointed to continued collaboration between the National and County governments in strengthening service delivery, particularly in the health and education sectors.

Osumba stated that the ongoing national development initiatives targeting youth empowerment and economic inclusion, referencing the NYOTA programme Phase II, aim to support young people through structured opportunities, creating an enabling economy for millions of unemployed youths.

He urged stakeholders and beneficiaries to remain attentive to official communication regarding the programme, cautioning against misinformation and unverified reports.

On infrastructure and urban development, Osumba pointed to ongoing projects in Nairobi, including Affordable Housing initiatives and the rehabilitation of the Nairobi River, noting that such programmes are intended to improve living conditions and create economic opportunities.

He said the Affordable Housing programme, including social housing projects, targets low-income residents and forms part of broader government efforts to address urban housing challenges.

Osumba acknowledged contributions from various stakeholders, including local leaders, education officers, and community members, for their role in supporting government initiatives and ensuring smooth implementation of development projects.

He commended cultural and school performances during the event, noting that such activities reflect unity and talent among young people.

Osumba reiterated the government’s commitment to continued service delivery, urging citizens to remain engaged and supportive of ongoing reforms.

The event brought together several senior administrators drawn from the National and county governments from the Nairobi Region, security officials, education representatives, and community leaders, who collectively pledged to strengthen cooperation in advancing national development priorities.

The County Commissioner’s remarks come at a time when the government is intensifying efforts to enhance service delivery, improve public safety, and expand economic opportunities across the Nairobi North Sub-Region.
