A Sh974 million Affordable Housing Project has been launched in Majira, Chogoria Ward, Maara constituency, demonstrating the government’s commitment to providing decent homes and creating local employment opportunities.
The project will include 392 housing units. It was jointly launched by Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki and Maara Member of parliament Kareke Mbiuki, with support from County Assembly Members including Chogoria MCA Frankline Mawira and Muthambi MCA Morris Maugu.
Governor Njuki highlighted that the initiative is in line with the national government’s Affordable Housing Programme, aimed at improving access to quality housing and enhancing living standards for citizens nationwide.
“The Affordable Housing Project is part of the government’s broader Affordable Housing Programme aimed at increasing access to decent and affordable homes while creating job opportunities for local residents, particularly the youth and artisans,” said Njuki.
He added that the county government has provided the land for the construction, while the national government is funding the development, thus, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to supporting national development priorities through collaborative initiatives that promote inclusivity and improve livelihoods.
On his part, MP Kareke lauded the partnership, emphasising that the project will not only provide housing but also generate numerous job opportunities for local residents, particularly those without formal technical skills.
“This project will provide jobs for many residents of Maara, especially in areas that do not require professional training. We want our people to be the first beneficiaries of this development,” Mbiuki said.
In addition to the housing project, the leaders also commissioned the construction of student hostels at Muraga Technical Training Institute (TTI), a move expected to expand accommodation for learners and promote technical education in the region.
The Sh974 million investment underscores the government’s vision to integrate infrastructure development with youth empowerment, ensuring that economic growth translates into tangible benefits for communities in Tharaka Nithi County and beyond.
