Keiyo South set for expanded electricity connection

More than 3,200 households in Keiyo South Sub County are set to benefit from expanded electricity access through the implementation of 45 Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Projects, a major rural electrification initiative aimed at accelerating socio-economic development in the area.

Valued at Sh286 million, the investment is expected to connect the households to the national distribution network and accelerate socio-economic transformation.

Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei said the programme will see 104 households immediately connected to electricity through transformer maximization, while other households will follow later.

Speaking during the event, Koskei said the programme underscored the Government’s commitment to ensuring more Kenyans have access to reliable and affordable electricity.

“I launched the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Programme, under which 104 households will be connected through transformer maximization. Expanding access to reliable electricity is improving livelihoods, supporting businesses and creating new opportunities for economic growth,” he said.

Koskei noted that Keiyo South Constituency is implementing 45 Last Mile Electricity Connectivity projects worth Sh286 million, which will benefit 3,285 households upon completion.

He added that across Elgeyo Marakwet County, 83 electricity connectivity projects valued at Sh604 million are underway and are expected to connect 6,059 households to the national grid.

Keiyo South Member of Parliament Gideon Kimaiyo welcomed the programme, saying it would significantly improve the lives of residents by increasing access to electricity in rural villages.

“This programme will open up our villages for development by enabling more homes, schools, and businesses to access electricity. Reliable power will spur investment, create employment opportunities for our youth and improve the living standards of our people,” said Kimaiyo.

The MP commended the National Government for prioritizing rural electrification, noting that increased electricity access would enhance agricultural value addition, promote small and medium enterprises and improve access to digital services.

The Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Programme seeks to extend electricity supply from existing transformers to households located near the electricity network, reducing connection costs and bringing more families onto the national grid.
