Butere residents set for new water treatment project

Thousands of households and public institutions in Butere Sub-county are expected to gain access to reliable and safe drinking water following the ongoing construction of a new water treatment facility aimed at addressing persistent water shortage in the area.

The Firatsi Compact Filtration Unit (CFU), currently under construction, will draw water from a nearby river, treat it and pump it to an elevated steel tank before being supplied to homes, schools and other public institutions.

Speaking yesterday during an inspection of the project, Chief Officer for Water, Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources  Mariam Were said the investment was part of the county government’s efforts to strengthen water infrastructure and expand access to clean and safe water.

“The project is designed to provide residents with safe drinking water while improving the reliability of supply across Butere Sub-county. Installation of solar power will also lower operational costs and enhance sustainability,” she said.

Dr Were said the project, which is expected to be completed within six months, includes construction of the treatment unit and installation of a solar-powered pumping system.

The inspection team also assessed the operational status of Emukhura Spring and Simbio City Borehole to identify interventions needed to improve water supply to surrounding communities.

Were also said plans are underway to extend water connectivity to Ikalikha Dispensary to ensure patients, health workers and nearby residents access clean water.
