The youth in Bomet County have been urged to register in the ongoing recruitment of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme, an empowerment project jointly facilitated by the government of Kenya and the World Bank.
Speaking in Bomet town, the local Acting County Commissioner Reuben Ratemo said the project, which was unveiled by President William Ruto earlier this year seeks to improve the livelihoods of vulnerable Kenyan youth aged between 18 and 29 years, with an upper ceiling of 35 years for persons with disabilities, by providing the beneficiaries with an initial cash grant of Sh50 000 for enterprise development.
He called upon all the targeted youth to register within this week before the application period ends, to qualify for the programme.
Through the Nyota project, up to 70 youth from each of the 1450 electoral wards in the country receive an initial Sh50, 000 as start-up funds for entrepreneurship.
At the same time, other selected youth will benefit from other empowerment products within the initiative such as the Recognition of Prior Learning certification and on-the job learning placement opportunities.
The county commissioner said that the recruitment exercise was transparent and easy to apply through an online platform powered by a free mobile telephony service number *254#.
Ratemo asked national government administration officers to organize barazas and use other public forms to sensitize the target youths who have dropped out of school at form four or lower levels who don’t have basic training in any field to apply for the programme.
In the five year programme youth who have already acquired apprentice skills will have an opportunity to be certified by government institutions such as NITA, while others will be placed in public and private entities for an on the job training.
