Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) learners in Kiambu County have received a batch of books from the Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB), in a move aimed at strengthening foundational literacy at the pre-primary level.
The books were officially received by County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Gender, Culture and Social Services, Dr Mercy Njagi, during a handover ceremony attended by learners and education officials.
The donated materials include age-appropriate storybooks and curriculum support resources aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which places significant emphasis on literacy development at the foundational stage.
Dr Njagi welcomed the gesture, expressing appreciation for the partnership. “We appreciate the Kenya Literature Bureau for partnering with us in promoting quality early childhood education. Such collaborations play a key role in ensuring our learners have the resources they need to thrive,” she said.
KLB, a state corporation established under the Kenya Literature Bureau Act (Cap 209), is mandated to publish, print, and distribute educational and literary materials to schools and other institutions across the country. The donation forms part of broader efforts to improve access to quality learning resources in public ECDE centers.
The County education officials noted that strengthening early grade literacy remains a key priority, particularly at the pre-primary level where foundational reading, communication, and cognitive skills are developed. Access to relevant and engaging reading materials is expected to enhance classroom instruction, encourage independent reading habits, and improve overall learning outcomes among young learners.
The initiative further underscores the ongoing collaboration between the Kiambu County Government and education stakeholders in improving learning materials, infrastructure, and the overall quality of early childhood education across the county.
