Chuka University has received a significant boost for its food security research initiatives with 42 students being awarded scholarships under the World Bank’s Food Systems and Resilience Program.
The beneficiaries include 15 doctorate candidates and 27 Master’s students, where each doctorate student will receive Sh1.5 million, while Master’s students will get Sh1 million to support their research.
The program, initiated and presented to the World Bank, represents a pioneering initiative at Chuka University.
It aims at strengthening innovation, research, and practical solutions in agriculture while addressing food security and climate resilience in Kenya and beyond.
In addition to financial support, the scholars will undergo structured induction, academic mentorship, and quarterly monitoring. They will also benefit from coaching, scientific conferences, and professional exchanges.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Henry Mutembei, who chairs the Scholarships Technical Committee of the KSAP Project, said the initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader food security and agricultural transformation strategies.
“This program goes beyond scholarships and offering students opportunities to conduct meaningful research that can transform communities. Thus, it is a turning point for Chuka University, positioning us as a hub for research and innovation that directly responds to society’s most pressing challenges,” said Professor Mutembei.
