Five people are receiving treatment at Sultan Hamud Hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a head-on collision along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway on Monday night.
According to police reports, the accident occurred around 9 p.m. at Kalimbini area in Mukaa Subcounty when a Nissan UD lorry, registration number KAY 612 NZD2653, rammed into a Toyota Probox, registration number KDN 479 P, which was ferrying five passengers.
Mukaa Subcounty Police Commander, Mr. Abduba Hussein, said the lorry, driven by an unidentified driver who fled the scene after the crash, was overtaking another vehicle when it collided head-on with the oncoming Toyota Probox.
“The occupants of the Probox sustained deep cuts on their hands, eyes, and thighs. They were rushed to Sultan Hamud Hospital where they are currently undergoing treatment,” Hussein told KNA on Tuesday.
The police commander further confirmed that both vehicles were extensively damaged and have since been towed to Sultan Hamud Police Station pending inspection.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the driver of the lorry, who is believed to have escaped immediately after the accident.
