More than 40,000 households in Kakamega County are set to be connected to the National electricity grid under the Government’s Last Mile Connectivity Programme (LMCP), Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has said.
Speaking over the weekend after commissioning the Kenya Power-funded Imanyika Last Mile Connectivity Project in Imanyika Village, West Marama Ward, Butere Sub county, Wandayi said the government remains committed to ensuring every Kenyan has access to affordable and reliable electricity to support socio-economic transformation.
The Cabinet Secretary, who was accompanied by Butere MP Tindi Mwale, also flagged off construction materials for the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC)-funded Ebuhamwa–Emukhaye Last Mile Connectivity Project.
“The Last Mile Connectivity Programme is transforming lives by bringing electricity closer to our people. These projects reflect President William Ruto’s commitment under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda to expand access to affordable and reliable electricity. In Kakamega County alone, we are targeting the connection of more than 40,000 households to the national grid,” Wandayi said.
He noted that increased electricity connectivity would spur economic growth by enabling the establishment and expansion of small businesses, improving learning conditions in schools, enhancing healthcare services and creating employment opportunities for young people.
Wandayi said the projects are being implemented through a partnership involving the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Kenya Power and REREC to accelerate rural electrification and bridge the energy access gap in underserved communities.
He urged residents to take advantage of the expanded electricity network by investing in productive enterprises that would improve household incomes and strengthen local economies.
The CS reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to completing ongoing electrification projects across the country, saying access to electricity remains a key pillar in achieving inclusive development and improving the quality of life for all Kenyans.
He added that sustained investment in power infrastructure would continue opening up rural areas to new economic opportunities while supporting the country’s long-term development agenda.
