More than 400 young people and women in Siaya County have received a major economic boost after the Government, through the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), distributed business equipment worth approximately Sh10 million to 15 organized groups under the Kenya Jobs and Economic Transformation (KJET) Project.
The beneficiaries, drawn from Alego Usonga and Ugunja constituencies, received a wide range of income-generating equipment, including concrete mixers, car wash machines, shaving machines, hair dryers, motorcycles and other business tools aimed at strengthening micro and small enterprises while creating sustainable livelihoods.
The distribution exercise was held at the County Commissioner’s Grounds in Siaya Town and brought together MSEA officials, local leaders and hundreds of youths and women eager to benefit from a government initiative designed to tackle unemployment through entrepreneurship and enterprise development.
The KJET Project is a five-year Government programme running from 2024 to 2029. Funded by the World Bank and implemented across all 47 counties, the programme seeks to increase private sector investment, improve market access and create 45,000 sustainable jobs nationwide by supporting priority Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) clusters.
The empowerment initiative in Siaya was implemented by MSEA in collaboration with Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Samuel Atandi, with youth and women groups identified as key beneficiaries because of their significant role in driving local economic growth.
Speaking during the distribution ceremony, Atandi commended the beneficiaries for organizing themselves into registered groups, saying the move had positioned them to access government empowerment programmes aimed at reducing unemployment and stimulating entrepreneurship.
“The youth have demonstrated that when they organize themselves into structured groups, they become easier to support through government programmes. I encourage more young people to embrace this approach because it opens doors to opportunities that can transform lives and improve household incomes,” he said.
The legislator observed that youth unemployment remains one of the country’s biggest socio-economic challenges, making entrepreneurship an important avenue for creating jobs and wealth.
He urged young people to embrace self-employment instead of relying solely on formal employment opportunities, noting that the MSME sector continues to be one of Kenya’s largest employers.
Atandi also challenged leaders across the country to redefine their engagement with young people by prioritizing economic empowerment over political mobilization.
“It is important that leaders do not only remember young people during election campaigns and political rallies. We should not merely use them as political tools. We must also empower them economically so that they become self-reliant, earn dignified livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to the growth of our economy,” he said.
He urged beneficiaries to safeguard the equipment and ensure it serves its intended purpose of generating income and creating additional employment opportunities within their communities.
The MP further encouraged the groups to embrace accountability, transparency and sound financial management to enable their businesses to grow and attract more support from both the Government and development partners.
Atandi explained that the equipment distributed was carefully matched to the needs identified by each group to maximize productivity and ensure long-term sustainability.
“They are the ones who identified the businesses they wanted to venture into and the equipment required. This demand-driven approach increases the chances of success because the beneficiaries have ownership of the projects,” he noted.
Siaya Deputy County Commissioner Robert Ng’etich challenged the youth to take full advantage of the opportunities being created by the Government instead of waiting for the limited formal employment opportunities available in the country.
He said entrepreneurship has become an essential pillar in addressing unemployment and stimulating local economic development, particularly among young people.
“You are fortunate to have a government that is deliberately creating opportunities for the youth. Embrace entrepreneurship because it provides a practical pathway to economic independence. Use these machines to establish businesses that will support your families while creating employment opportunities for others,” he said.
Ng’etich urged beneficiaries to maintain discipline, teamwork and accountability in managing the shared assets, noting that collective ownership requires transparency and responsible leadership.
He further encouraged young people to remain focused on productive ventures and avoid activities that could jeopardize their future, saying enterprise development provides a sustainable alternative to crime, drug abuse and other social challenges affecting unemployed youth.
Among those celebrating the initiative was Sylvester Oyola, whose youth group received two car wash machines.
Oyola described the support as life-changing, saying it had provided members of his group with a genuine opportunity to earn a living through honest work.
“As unemployed young people, this equipment has given us hope. We now have tools that can generate income instead of remaining idle. It gives us an opportunity to support ourselves, improve our lives and avoid engaging in crime or other destructive activities,” he said.
He revealed that the group plans to establish a modern car wash business in Siaya Town capable of serving motorists from the town and surrounding areas.
According to Oyola, the members are committed to managing the business professionally and reinvesting profits to enable future expansion and create employment opportunities for more young people.
“We have waited for such an opportunity for a long time. We are determined to use these machines responsibly because we understand many people are depending on this project to succeed. If we manage it well, we can expand and eventually employ other young people,” he added.
Another beneficiary, Emily Ahono, who operates a salon business in Siaya Town, said the equipment she received would significantly improve the quality and efficiency of services offered to her clients.
She explained that inadequate equipment had previously limited the growth of her business, forcing her to turn away customers whenever demand exceeded her capacity.
“This support has come at the right time. With better equipment, I will improve the quality of my services, attract more customers and increase my income,” she said.
Ahono expressed confidence that the expanded business would eventually enable her to employ additional workers, thereby extending the benefits of the Government initiative beyond the direct beneficiaries.
“I believe this is not only support for me but also an opportunity for other young people because as my business grows, I will need more employees. That means more families will benefit from this initiative,” she added.
Officials noted that the 15 organized groups comprise an average of about 40 members each, translating to more than 400 direct beneficiaries expected to benefit from the intervention.
They expressed optimism that the investment would stimulate local enterprise development, strengthen household incomes and contribute to job creation within Siaya County.
The KJET Project remains one of the Government’s flagship economic transformation programmes targeting the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise sector, which continues to play a critical role in employment creation, innovation and economic growth.
