Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, has stated that the government will continue to implement strategic programmes in sports to harness the talents of youths in the country.
Mvurya, who spoke while inspecting the construction of Migori Stadium, said that the government was committed to improving and upgrading stadiums in the country, to provide a platform for youths to showcase their talents and create a decent living.
He was pleased with the 40 percent work completion in the stadium and affirmed that both the National and the County government will closely monitor the project, to ensure it is completed in the stipulated time.
The Sh700million project, once completed, will have a seating capacity of 10,000 with a running track, making it one of the modern facilities in the Nyanza region.
The South Nyanza region has also benefited from the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay, a government project, that has a seating capacity of 12,000
“The government is committed to working with the County government, to ensure all projects are completed in time to provide economic empowerment to citizens, especially the youth”, said Mvurya.
According to Mvurya, the upgrading of the stadiums in the country, will help to mobilise and develop talent, and generate a sustainable livelihood for the youths.
The CS, however, asked the residents of Migori to own and support government projects, adding that societal goodwill was crucial in sustaining government projects.
He said that sports infrastructure intertwined in investment will help to recognise youths’ capacities to earn a living, adding on other strategic programmes such as the Labour Mobility that is enhancing youth employability, the Affordable Housing Project, that has employed over 300,000 youths and the Sh20 billion Nyota project, that will empower youth in the business sector.
Mvurya, however, called upon the youth to connect with these opportunities to make it a reality by being proactive, available, steadfast and committed to benefit from government projects.
Migori Governor, Ochilo Ayacko, said that the Stadium, once completed, will empower the youths of Migori, identify new talents and contribute economically to the County.
