Plans are underway to mop up all learners still at home after school reopened, Rachuonyo South Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Sylvester Mwangulo has said
The DCC said this is in line with the government policy that stipulates that all children should be educated, hence should be in schools when school programmes are ongoing.
“No child should be at home when others are in schools. Even those children who have cleared grade 9 and have attained low grades, must be in school,” he said.
The DCC said the government has released capitation to all schools for term one so that the school programmes run smoothly.
“The issue of school going children staying at home with some loitering at shopping centres will not be tolerated,” he warned.
The DCC said the government was also concerned about the increasing rate of alcohol and drug abuse and warned that anybody who will be found selling the same to children will be arrested and arraigned in court
He warned bar owners that besides arrest, their licenses will be revoked.
The DCC was speaking Friday during the 7th edition of “Back to School” event organized by Homa Bay County Women Representative Joyce Atieno Osogo (Bensuda).
Through the programme various learners received bursaries and sanitary pads under the affirmative action
According to the Woman Rep the programme has five components which she said include academic mentorship, bursary allocation, sexual reproductive health awareness, gender based violence and health and sanitation.
