Baringo governor Benjamin Cheboi has read the riot act to his Cabinet alleging poor performance by some key departments.
Speaking when he presided over signing of performance contracts for 2025/2026 financial year at his office grounds in Kabarnet town on Monday, Governor Cheboi stated that going forward he will not hesitate to take decisive action against those who fail to perform as expected.
He expressed dismay that the performance of his administration for last year was unsatisfactory regretting that key departments including health, water and roads performed dismally in service delivery.
The county boss blamed the respective County Executive Committee Members (CECM’s) and Chief Officers for their detachment from the realities on the ground and failing to take prompt action against any illegality or ineptitude by the juniors.
He said he has been receiving constant feedback from members of the public complaining about inaccessibility of healthcare services across the county.
“I have personally been receiving complaints emanating from lack of drugs at our healthcare facilities and the doctors send them where they have an interest,” he said.
The governor mentioned a lapse in a follow up on a promise to provide sanitation facilities for Chemususu dam in Eldama Ravine to cushion the critical infrastructure against pollution
Cheboi also noted that there is a failure to check on performance indicators like the number of people who visit various hospitals for waterborne diseases therefore increasing the cost of running the facilities.
The governor added that the county is doing badly on water provision especially in the expansive Tiaty constituency where mothers and young children are trekking several kilometres in search of the precious commodity.
He noted that it is shocking to note that some of the top county officials have done very little to the extent that they park their vehicles several kilometres away due to bad roads within their localities.
Cheboi challenged them to start developing their localities which will in turn benefit the larger community.
He at the same urged them to emulate the conduct of a team he worked with during his first term in office between 2013-2017 which he said some have since earned themselves plump jobs in the government for serving the county dedicatedly.
Deputy governor Eng Felix Kimaiyo in his remarks urged the CECMs to take their roles and responsibilities with the seriousness it deserved since they have been bestowed with responsibilities of providing quality services to wananchi who expect a lot from them.
Kimaiyo said despite limited financial resources, the county administration should at all-times account for every resource spent and ensure transparency in all its functions.
