Residents of Katelembo in Mua Ward, Machakos County, have raised concerns over a surge in criminal activities that have left many living in fear. This follows the killing of a middle-aged domestic worker during an attempted robbery, which has heightened anxiety in the area.
The victim, who was guarding a home in Katelembo, was attacked by a gang that struck in the night. He died on the spot, while the criminals escaped. The incident has fuelled growing fears among locals, who say gang activity has become rampant in recent weeks.
Community members suspect that some lorries transporting sand at night may be ferrying criminals into the area. According to residents, the gangs sometimes disguise themselves in police uniforms, spreading confusion and fear.
Speaking during a community baraza with security agents and local leaders, resident Angela Kioko said the insecurity has destabilized homes and businesses. She revealed that criminals often poison guard dogs before breaking into houses and stealing valuables.
Michael Mutua, an elderly villager, echoed the concerns, saying robberies were now frequent compared to the past when the area was relatively peaceful. He urged the government to establish a police station in Katelembo to restore order and foster trust in law enforcement.
Machakos Central Sub-County Deputy Police commander, Kemboi Kimutai, acknowledged the rise in crime and assured residents that security measures would be reinforced. He confirmed that police were actively pursuing the gangs responsible for the violence.
“We have come following a murder incident after a man manning the house was killed. We plan to put in place appropriate security measures and activate community policing to curb insecurity,” Kimutai said.
The Deputy police commander added that collaboration between residents and law enforcement was key to defeating the gangs. He urged locals to report suspicious activities and support police efforts to restore safety in the area.
Residents, however, maintained that without a permanent police presence in Katelembo, criminal gangs would continue exploiting the security gap. The call for a new police station was strongly supported during the baraza as the community seeks long-term solutions to rising insecurity.
The recent murder has intensified pressure on authorities to act swiftly before the situation escalates further.
