The Government of Kenya has expressed profound honor and pride following the historic decision by World Athletics to award Nairobi the rights to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships.
This significant initiative marks a defining milestone for both Kenya and Africa, reinforcing Kenya’s esteemed position in the realm of global athletics.
On behalf of President Dr. William Samoei Ruto, the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, extended appreciation to World Athletics and its Council for their trust in Kenya’s capabilities to manage this prestigious event.
“This accolade not only showcases Kenya’s rich history of exceptional athletic talent but also underlines the unifying power of sport to bridge borders and foster camaraderie among nations,” expressed Mvurya in a press statement.
The CS noted that Kenyan athletes have long made their mark worldwide, consistently breaking records in various athletic disciplines, including track, road races, cross-country events, and marathons.
“This legacy has earned Kenya the reputation of being the ‘Home of Champions’, he asserted.
Mvurya established that under President Ruto’s guidance, the government aims to invest substantially in enhancing athletic frameworks, modern facilities, and institutional support.
The CS announced that noteworthy improvements are planned for stadiums and training centers across the nation, particularly the Raila Odinga International Stadium, ensuring these venues meet international standards.
He noted that collaboration will be key as the government partners with World Athletics, Athletics Kenya, and other stakeholders to establish superior infrastructure, technology, transport, security, accommodation, and medical systems required for a world-class championship.
Looking ahead to 2029, the CS maintained that Kenya’s ambition extends beyond simply hosting a competition.
He said the focus is on creating a lasting legacy through the enhancement of sporting institutions, providing opportunities for youth, encouraging investment, and boosting sports tourism, thereby contributing to a more robust sports economy.
“This championship is not just about athletic excellence; it invites the global athletics family to experience the unparalleled beauty of Kenya—its culture, wildlife, landscapes, and renowned hospitality,” Mvurya reaffirmed.
