Kiambu County intensifies schools’ HPV vaccination drives

Kiambu County has intensified a school-based Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination outreach program aimed at protecting young girls from cervical cancer.

The exercise targets eligible girls before exposure to HPV, a virus associated with the majority of cervical cancer cases globally. Health experts identify HPV vaccination as one of the most effective interventions in preventing cervical cancer, which remains among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women.

County health teams are conducting vaccination exercises in schools while also sensitizing students, teachers and parents on the importance of early immunization and preventive healthcare.

The program is part of the county government’s efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare services and safeguard the health of young people through accessible vaccination initiatives.

Kiambu County Director of Health, Dr. Hillary Kagwa, said the outreach program is expected to improve vaccine uptake and significantly reduce future cervical cancer cases in the county.

“Preventive healthcare remains critical in protecting communities from avoidable diseases,” said Dr. Kagwa. “By vaccinating girls early, we are investing in a healthier future and reducing the risk of cervical cancer among women in our communities.”

Healthcare workers are also carrying out public awareness sessions to address misinformation surrounding the HPV vaccine and encourage parents to support the immunization programme.

Cervical cancer continues to pose a major public health challenge in Kenya, particularly in areas where access to screening and vaccination services remains limited.

The Kiambu initiative aligns with national and global efforts aimed at eliminating cervical cancer through increased vaccination coverage, routine screening and early intervention measures.

Parents and guardians have been urged to ensure eligible girls receive the vaccine during the ongoing school outreach exercise.

The vaccination campaign is expected to continue in more schools across Kiambu County in the coming months as the county government seeks to expand coverage and strengthen preventive healthcare services.
