Kiambu farmers set to gain skills and market linkages at upcoming Lari Agricultural Expo

Farmers, agribusiness stakeholders, and policymakers are set to converge at the upcoming Lari Farmers Expo on April 17, 2026.

The event targets to strengthen agricultural resilience and promote sustainable livelihoods across the region.

Organized by the Kiambu County Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives in partnership with various stakeholders, the one-day expo will take place at Soko Mjinga Grounds in Lari, within Kiambu County.

Wilfred Mwenda (center), CECM for Agriculture in Kiambu County, engages farmers during a recent agricultural expo, as preparations intensify for the upcoming Lari Farmers Expo.

The one-day event, will run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m and is open to the public free of charge.

The expo is expected to attract hundreds of farmers eager to learn about modern agricultural practices, climate-smart solutions and emerging opportunities in renewable energy.     Attendees will have access to practical farming demonstrations, expert-led sessions on livestock and crop management, and exhibitions showcasing quality farm inputs and services.

Speaking ahead of the event, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Wilfred Mwenda, emphasized the importance of such platforms in empowering farmers with knowledge and connections.

“This expo is not just an event, it is a strategic initiative to equip our farmers with the tools, skills, and networks they need to thrive in an evolving agricultural landscape,” Mwenda said.

“By embracing smart agriculture and renewable energy solutions, we are building resilient farming communities and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for future generations,” he said.

A key highlight of the expo will be networking opportunities, allowing farmers to engage directly with agricultural experts, extension officers, and fellow producers. Organizers say this interaction is crucial in fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration across the agricultural value chain.

The event also comes at a time when farmers are increasingly facing challenges related to climate change, rising input costs, and market access. By integrating innovation and sustainability into farming practices, stakeholders hope to address these challenges while improving productivity and income levels.

Those who will attend are encouraged to be ready to learn and to be as inquisitive as they can for maximum benefit, as the expo promises hands-on experiences and actionable insights.

Organizers have also urged those planning to attend to actively encourage their friends and fellow farmers to attend for maximum multiplier factor of the impact of the initiative.

Agriculture contributes about a quarter of Kenya’s GDP and employs over 40 percent of the population, with more than 70 percent of rural households relying on it.

However, over 80 percent of the country is arid or semi-arid, and fewer than 30 percent of smallholder farmers have adopted modern technologies, underscoring the need for platforms like the Lari Farmers Expo.
