Deputy President’s spouse Dr. Joyce Kindiki has told school girls to shun stereotypes and pursue sciences under the competency based education (CBE).
Mrs. Kindiki said there were outdated myths and misconceptions discouraging girls from studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in senior schools.
She said such myths include the perception that STEM is mainly meant for boys and that girls were incapable.
Speaking during a fundraiser for the construction of a science laboratory at Obalwanda Comprehensive School in Mbita Sub-county, the DP’s spouse said all stereotypes meant to discourage girls from pursuing STEM must be shunned.
“There are people who tell girls that STEM is for men and their competency is mainly in the kitchen. That is a false narrative I want all girls to shun,” she said.
Mrs. Kindiki told girls not to be distracted because STEM was for all students irrespective of their gender.
She said girls had the potential to compete on equal footing with their male counterparts in the STEM pathway.
“I want to tell girls that they are capable, intelligent and full of promise. Let them avoid stereotypes which limit their academic dreams,” said the DP’s spouse, adding that the future sustainable development of the country is anchored on STEM.
She said by pursuing STEM, students will be innovative and spur economic growth of the country.
“This will encourage innovation and problem solving skills in our country. No student should fear it,” she added.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga said education was key to the country’s socio-economic development, saying her government is committed to creating an enabling environment for learners to acquire education.
“We must always work hard to promote the education of our children. This is the only way we can be sure of productive future generations,” Wanga said.
The governor said her administration was keen on building a strong foundation of children through early childhood education (ECDE).
She said that the county government spent Sh1 million for construction of an ECDE classroom in Obwalanda school.
Wanga said their objective was to build a strong education foundation for learners to pursue their academic journeys.
Mbita Sub County Deputy County Commissioner Peter Mutiso said the laboratory will provide an enabling environment for innovative learning.
Mutiso said academic achievements could be derailed by poor infrastructure. “A science laboratory is a critical infrastructure in education. We want our students to have a conducive atmosphere for learning,” he said.
