New mothers and their newborns receive donations in Vihiga

A spirit of compassion and community support was witnessed at Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital (VTRH) as an NGO, Empowering the African Woman (ETAW), extended a helping hand to new mothers and their babies through the donation of essential maternal and neonatal care items.

The donation, which was officially handed over at the hospital, is aimed at easing the burden faced by mothers during the postnatal period while ensuring that newborns receive the basic necessities needed for a healthy start in life. The contribution reflects a shared commitment to promoting maternal and child health care and supporting vulnerable families within the community.

Among the items donated were high-quality infant clothing, diapers, and comfortable clothing for mothers recovering after childbirth. These supplies are expected to significantly improve the comfort and well-being of both mothers and their newborns during their stay at the hospital.

The handover ceremony brought together healthcare professionals from various departments within the hospital alongside representatives from ETAW

Present during the exercise were Amilia Ngoda, the nurse in charge of the Newborn Unit (NBU); Wilson Munene from the Medical Social Work Department and Rosalinda Munyendo, a nurse from the Postnatal Ward.

The hospital expressed their appreciation to ETAW for the thoughtful gesture, noting that such support plays a critical role in complementing healthcare services offered at the facility.

They observed that while the hospital continues to provide quality maternal and neonatal healthcare services, partnerships with organizations and well-wishers help bridge gaps and provide additional comfort to patients, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The donation is expected to benefit numerous mothers and infants admitted to the postnatal and newborn units, many of whom may face challenges in accessing essential baby care items. By providing these necessities, ETAW is helping to create a more supportive and dignified environment for mothers as they begin their parenting journey.

The initiative also highlights the importance of community involvement in strengthening healthcare systems. Through collaborations between healthcare institutions and community-based organizations, vulnerable populations can receive holistic support that extends beyond clinical care.

VTRH remains committed to promoting safe motherhood, reducing neonatal risks, and improving health outcomes for mothers and children across the county. The hospital continues to encourage partnerships that contribute to the welfare of patients and enhance service delivery.

The collaboration between ETAW and VTRH serves as a powerful reminder that collective action and community solidarity can make a meaningful difference in the lives of needy mothers and their newborns, ensuring that every child receives a warm and dignified welcome into the world.
