The Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) has downplayed claims that there are divisions within the united opposition establishment, amid reports of disquiet among chief luminaries.
Claims of cracks emerging in opposition started after united opposition leaders on Thursday, issued two parallel State of the Nation statements in Nairobi, with top leaders conspicuously missing the media briefings.
Party Leader, Lenny Kivuti, dismissed the allegations as false, maintaining that diversity of views among opposition parties was both normal and healthy.
Speaking to the media at the Party’s Headquarters at the LKIC in Embu Town on Saturday, Kivuti said each opposition party has the mandate to promote its own ideology, while still working towards a shared opposition agenda.
Kivuti affirmed that the opposition was very much united by common goals, despite individual parties holding internal discussions and pursuing their strategies to marshal support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“Political parties are free to engage in internal deliberations and reorganize themselves as they prepare for the next elections. This should not be mistaken for disunity,” said the Party Leader.
He accused the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) of trying to drive a wedge between various factions of the opposition, maintaining, it is a venture in futility.
Kivuti further said even if UDA was to align itself with the opposition, it should remain on the opposition side and not be part of the government.
On party matters, Kivuti said DEP was planning to hold its National Delegates Convention in January, during which key party issues will be ratified, including strategies aimed at strengthening unity within the broader opposition framework.
Kivuti said the Party was preparing for a nationwide recruitment drive, with the aim of becoming the most dominant political party in the Mt Kenya Region.
currently, the DEP Party has established 31 branches across the country and is targeting opening of offices in at least 40 counties, as part of its national expansion strategy.
